Bakerview Youth What's going on around Bakerview?

4Feb/120

Hello Youth, Parents and Leaders!

I'd like to invite you the Current Issues session tomorrow during Learning Centre Hour (10 AM-11AM). I'll be leading the presentation for all generations, and I'd love to have your voice to speak into the Q&A at the end.

I'll be presenting some of our philosophy behind youth ministry at Bakerview, and how that has affected our programming, purpose, and training. We'll be reviewing briefly the past year, and also discussing the way forward. I'd love to have your input!

Hope to see you there,

Pastor Stephen

Study: Multitasking hinders youth social skills

Tween girls who spend much of their waking hours switching frantically between YouTube, Facebook, television and text messaging are more likely to develop social problems, says a Stanford University study published in a scientific journal on Wednesday.

Young girls who spend the most time multitasking between various digital devices, communicating online or watching video are the least likely to develop normal social tendencies, according to the survey of 3,461 American girls aged 8 to 12 who volunteered responses.

Parents Meeting Tonight

A friendly reminder that we have our first parents meeting of 2011-2012 tonight. Things will get underway at 7 PM. I'd like to review the past few months with you, as well as look into the next few with you. I'd love to hear from you on what you're seeing in the youth, and any suggestions/hopes you have for the future.

On another note, our Senior High All-Nighter is this Thursday night, and I was wondering if a few of you would be willing to come in a 7 AM on Friday morning to help make breakfast (and eat it too!). It'd be a huge help to those of us that will be sleep deprived! :)

See you tonight at 7!

January Parents Meeting

Hello Parents!

I hope that 2012 has been off to a good start for you. I know that 2011 led to some tough choices for many of you, and many unexpected things came your way as well. I wanted to start off the e-mail by letting you know that I pray for each of you (at least) weekly. Your job with the youth is so vital, the day in and day out parenting and love that you shower on the kids makes a huge difference.

Secondly, I wanted to apologize for the lack of parent meetings up until this point. I have been rushing to catch up since the wedding, and the Christmas break finally gave me a chance to do that. If you ever have any concern or comment that you want to pass along my way, bad or (my favourite) good, then you can always call or send me an e-mail!

That leads me into why I'm sending the e-mail. January 23rd will be our first parents meeting of the 2011-2012 youth year. We'll plan to have one more towards the end. I'd like to get together with you to review the past few months, get your feedback on how youth is going, touch base with you about the Berlin missions trip, and give you a quick overview of how the next few months is going.

We'll plan to meet at 7 PM, and wrap up around 8 PM. I'll provide the donuts (dessert) and coffee (lifeblood... for some of you!).

Look forward to see you early next week,

Pastor Stephen

Christmas Banquet Help

Hello Parents!

It's been a busy few days at Bakerview, but with the help of the jr youth leader's the youth room is once again clean and back to where it needs to be!

As per the e-mail last night, we're having the Sr Banquet tonight... and it's beginning at 6 PM. Ruth and I will be in the kitchen cooking for the banquet this afternoon, and we're wondering if there are a few brave souls out there who are willing to come and help do the final prep work for the food, put it out, and help put the dishes through after the food is ready. You, of course, will get dinner out of the deal!

As far as details, we would probably need two or three people there from 5:30 onwards, and I'd imagine the everything will be done by 8 PM. The kitchen downstairs DOES have an industrial dishwasher, so most of it is loading, drying and putting away.

If you're able to bless us in this manner, please let me know! One of those details that slipped through the cracks until the last moment.

Thanks!

Upcoming Amazing Race

Hello Parents!

I wanted to invite you to have a little more hands on experience with the youth this coming week. On Thursday night, the Senior High are having an Amazing Race around Abbotsford. There will be multiple stops with challenges at each one.

The event will be this coming Thursday, December 1st. We'll be running it from 6 PM to 10 PM.

This is where you come in. We are looking for drivers for the teams to 'taxi' them around Abbotsford for an evening. With around 30-35 people, we're looking for around 8 drivers. If you've ever seen the Amazing race, having a good taxi driver can make all the difference!

Additionally, we'll need a few people who are willing to be part of a puzzle. Present them with the riddle, and make sure that each group carries out the task properly!

If this is something you're interested in doing, please let me know! Even if you're only able to help for part of the evening, there is the possibility we could squeeze you in! :)

Thanks so much for the time you pour into your youth, it makes a huge difference!

Berlin Missions Trip Forms

Hi Everyone!

Following our meeting last night, below you will find the two documents you'll need if you are thinking about coming to Berlin in March.

The first document is the full application. It is meant to be printed double sided, so there are some blank pages in it.

The second document is just the reference forms. If you have someone who is not local, or who you don't see regularly who will be a reference, you can send them that link, and have them send it into me directly!

A reminder to have all forms in my box or e-mailed to me by October 16th, next Sunday.

As always, if you have any questions, feel free to give me a call or send me an e-mail.

interCHANGE: Harvest

I wanted to invite you to our second run through of interCHANGE, a Sunday Morning Learning Centre for all of the generations. In June, we talked about youth issues, and had good discussion around the tables about misconceptions different ages had about what youth were going through today.

This Sunday, we're going to talk about the changing meaning of harvest. We've gone from a society that was built around agriculture, to a more modern, consumerist culture, where the only thing marking 'harvest time' is the changing of the seasons. We're going to get together all different generations of Bakerview to talk about how 'harvest' is still real to us today, and share some of our experiences from the past!

I'd love to have you there, youth, parents and grandparents alike. We'll have snacks available, so please let me know if you plan on being there! Our morning will get started at 10 AM in the Fireside room (behind the Sanctuary).

MCC Sale and start of the new year!

Hope your summers are wrapping up (AHHHHHHH) nicely. Many fun memories made, and maybe a few of them even at youth! We had a blast heading down to Wild Waves on Wednesday, and if you missed out, there is always next year! :)

Next week I'm getting married, and once again, you are all invited if you want to come! Just let me know, and I can pass along the details. Love to have you there!

I have a few items to take care of before then, though, and you can help me! The first on is that while I'm away, the MCC Sale is happening. Many of you have participated in years past, and it is always a ton of fun! Plus, you're helping raise money for an organization that helps people all over the world each and every day. We need 15 people who are willing to come out and help serve sausages on a bun. Each shift is a little over an hour and a half, and afterwards you're free to wander around the Sale and see what else is out there! Here are some of the details:

Friday, September 9th
5 PM - 9 PM

You can sign up for a 'shift' by putting your name in the spreadsheet online. Or, if you would rather not do that, just e-mail me what time you would like to work. We have shifts from 4:45-6:00, 5:45-7:30, or 7:15-9:00. And for the leaders, there is always space around the BBQ to do some grilling, so let me know if you want to come help with that as well! You can click here to sign up. Please do it sooner rather than later so I know it's all taken care of before I'm gone! :)

Last but not least... YOUTH IS STARTING SOON! We're getting under way September 14th and 15th, so make sure you mark your calendars. It's going to be an awesome year!

I miss you guys, and I'm looking forward to youth starting up again soon. Have an awesome rest of the summer!
