Study: Multitasking hinders youth social skills

Tween girls who spend much of their waking hours switching frantically between YouTube, Facebook, television and text messaging are more likely to develop social problems, says a Stanford University study published in a scientific journal on Wednesday.

Young girls who spend the most time multitasking between various digital devices, communicating online or watching video are the least likely to develop normal social tendencies, according to the survey of 3,461 American girls aged 8 to 12 who volunteered responses.

All-Nighter

Exams are ALMOST done! It's time to celebrate! We're having our yearly all-nighter!

This year, we have all sorts of awesome fun things planned. We're starting off the evening heading to Langley for lasertag, then coming back to Abbotsford for some late night bowling, and (I'm still confirming it) hopefully heading to the ice for some skating (I'll update tomorrow when I know, but plan to bring your skates!).

Then we'll come back to the church for night games, cookies, popcorn, board games and movies! It's going to be a blast. Something you definitely don't want to miss.

The all nighter costs $25, and things get started at 6:30. Pickup is Friday morning at 8AM.

Parents, we have some help for Friday morning, but we could use a few extra hands to help make breakfast! :)

Got questions? Give me a call or send me an e-mail!

Update: 26/01/2012 @ 11:38 AM - Just a quick update on tonight, we ARE going skating, and there WILL be skate rentals! Cost to you is $25 for the event, and $2 for the skates. Just let us know when you sign in and pay the additional money, and we'll get it all arranged when we get to the rink! :)

Also, parents, we have one parent who is coming in tomorrow, and it would be a huge blessing if one or two more of you could come in and help us with breakfast! We'll be picking up the food, and it would be a huge help to some very tired youth leaders. :)

See you all tonight at 6:30! The bus leaves at 7, so don't be late!

Movie Night!

It's just one of those weeks... we've had snow, we've had rain. Now it's time for friends and relaxing! :) Tomorrow night we're going to kick back and enjoy each other. Popcorn, pop, laughter and commentary on a fun movie! Bria's bringing the movie, and I think it might have a certain Disney theme! :)

Things get started at 6:30, and the movie starts shortly after that, don't be late... and feel free to come in your Onesie, Alyssa! :)

Parents Meeting Tonight

A friendly reminder that we have our first parents meeting of 2011-2012 tonight. Things will get underway at 7 PM. I'd like to review the past few months with you, as well as look into the next few with you. I'd love to hear from you on what you're seeing in the youth, and any suggestions/hopes you have for the future.

On another note, our Senior High All-Nighter is this Thursday night, and I was wondering if a few of you would be willing to come in a 7 AM on Friday morning to help make breakfast (and eat it too!). It'd be a huge help to those of us that will be sleep deprived! :)

See you tonight at 7!

Discussion Night: Juno

UPDATE: 19/01/2012, 4:10PM - Youth will be happening tonight! There will be snow later, but it shouldn't affect us. See you all at 6:30!

Once again, some things have changed! :) You like change, don't you? :) Because of the many things that are going on around Bakerview lately, we've decided to change tomorrow's Boys/Girls night into a movie + discussion night. Yes, there will be popcorn.

We're going to be watching the movie Juno, and having a discussion afterwards about the importance of relationships, and how they play out in our lives. The movie deals with a variety of things that many of you see each and every day, and we want to talk about them!

Parents: I do want to warn you that the movie deals with some fairly deep themes, if you haven't had a chance to watch it. You have the freedom to not send your youth, and I want to give you fair warning about the kind of conversation we're going to be having, and the media they'll be watching. You can see a full rundown of the movie, and it's themes at http://www.pluggedin.ca/videos/2008/Q1/Juno.aspx

We'll get started at 6:30 tomorrow night! Because of the weather, please check your e-mail or the blog before you come to youth. I will post a final update on whether youth will be happening. We'll make a call based off of the weather before then!

January Parents Meeting

Hello Parents!

I hope that 2012 has been off to a good start for you. I know that 2011 led to some tough choices for many of you, and many unexpected things came your way as well. I wanted to start off the e-mail by letting you know that I pray for each of you (at least) weekly. Your job with the youth is so vital, the day in and day out parenting and love that you shower on the kids makes a huge difference.

Secondly, I wanted to apologize for the lack of parent meetings up until this point. I have been rushing to catch up since the wedding, and the Christmas break finally gave me a chance to do that. If you ever have any concern or comment that you want to pass along my way, bad or (my favourite) good, then you can always call or send me an e-mail!

That leads me into why I'm sending the e-mail. January 23rd will be our first parents meeting of the 2011-2012 youth year. We'll plan to have one more towards the end. I'd like to get together with you to review the past few months, get your feedback on how youth is going, touch base with you about the Berlin missions trip, and give you a quick overview of how the next few months is going.

We'll plan to meet at 7 PM, and wrap up around 8 PM. I'll provide the donuts (dessert) and coffee (lifeblood... for some of you!).

Look forward to see you early next week,

Pastor Stephen

Foundations: Making Wise Choices

Update 18/01/12 2:52 PM - Youth tonight is being cancelled. The roads and the weather is too erratic for it to be worth the risk. It's only... wise. (pun intended) Have a great week! HAVE FUN IN THE SNOW!

Hey Everyone!

Hope you're enjoying the snow. I want to let you know that tomorrow night is up in the air, but for right now, we'll plan on it HAPPENING. I will send out an e-mail and update the blog by 4 PM tomorrow if it is not going to happen. I expect it will, but I'll check the weather forecasts, and if it's looking like the roads are going to be treacherous at the beginning or end of youth, we won't do it for everyone's safety.

Nonetheless... it's our Foundations week! :) From 1 Kings 3:

That night the LORD appeared to Solomon in a dream, and God said, “What do you want? Ask, and I will give it to you!”

Solomon replied, “You showed faithful love to your servant my father, David, because he was honest and true and faithful to you. And you have continued your faithful love to him today by giving him a son to sit on his throne.

“Now, O LORD my God, you have made me king instead of my father, David, but I am like a little child who doesn’t know his way around. And here I am in the midst of your own chosen people, a nation so great and numerous they cannot be counted! Give me an understanding heart so that I can govern your people well and know the difference between right and wrong. For who by himself is able to govern this great people of yours?”

The Lord was pleased that Solomon had asked for wisdom. So God replied, “Because you have asked for wisdom in governing my people with justice and have not asked for a long life or wealth or the death of your enemies— I will give you what you asked for! I will give you a wise and understanding heart such as no one else has had or ever will have! And I will also give you what you did not ask for—riches and fame! No other king in all the world will be compared to you for the rest of your life!

We're going to be talking about making wise choices! Such a simple thing to talk about, and such a hard thing to do. But it starts with the small things. Come out tomorrow (if it happens!) to find out more! See you at 6:30.

Pastor Stephen

Foundations: Friends

Hello Everyone!

It's that time of the week once again! We're getting together for youth! You're likely gearing up towards your exams for the end of the month, but I wanted to give you one shining piece of news for that... at the end of exam week, we'll have our all-nighter! It will be the Thursday night, and I double checked that none of you will have exams on Friday -- you'll have the day off.

For those of you who also have been on Facebook recently, I hope you're keeping the Kroeker family in your prayers as they go through this time. It's not an easy thing with a family member sick, and we as a community can uplift them both in prayer and action.

Tomorrow night we'll be getting together at the regular time to talk about relationships. We're starting our series on relationships talking about cross-gender friendships, and how we look at others. Bring your Bible's with you. I'm looking forward to the conversation!

See you tomorrow!

Nail Polish and Golf Balls

Hope your weeks have been going well. I had a ton of fun with you all last week at lasertag, and we're going to continue that this week with a boys and girls night! Pay attention closely to where you need to be and when, because we're splitting between the two groups.

Girls: You're having a 'girly' night here at the church. Word has it it's going to involve nail polish (ew), Friendship bracelets (fun!) and tea and cookies! (mmmm). Regular times apply. You'll have to ask Bria/Chantal, because there was also a rumour of it being a PJ party, but I can't confirm or deny that.

Boys: We're going to go hit some golf balls and play some video games! See who can crush that golf ball the furthest, and more! No cost to you, just be at the church at 6:30 sharp!

See you tomorrow night! Praying for you all.
